Dam'n Small Linux (DSL) Small, Lite, Free OS

(4 posts)

  1. I am writing this post from a 100% FREE Operating System which requires only 50MB of disk space for a full install.

It isn't installed on the computer that I'm using, because it is missing the hard drive. The OS is loaded into the RAM of an old Pentium-II, and will occasionally search the CD for resources.

You can check it out at:

It's usable for a workstation / web browser, but I will be reviewing the other options for older computers before I decide what to install on my "new" eIDE hard drive...when it gets here.

    :)

  2. Actually I have just rebooted into Damn Small Linux.

While antiX packs plenty of features, this Damn Small Linux is lighter weight and allows this old computer to fly (and I'm running it in a RamDrive!).

I'll probably be trying a few other versions of linux before making the final decision of which ti install on this old computer, but Dam'n Small Linux is impressive.

    covers:

    Hard Disk Installation

Installation of Extensions and Program Compilation

    Sound Problems

    Installing Debian Packages

    Installing Opera

    and much, much, more...

  4. My final thought on DSL is that it is a fine operating system for old, old computers that have limited resources.
You might want to get acquainted with Linux..especially if you like to "get under the hood" your box.

I look forward to doing a full install of DSL in the future..running Apache, MySql & PHP.. I'll put the box online when I make this happen.
