My 1972 Schwinn World Traveler

(28 posts)

  1. Bought it in September of 2016.
Appears to be all original right down to the tires.

Mileage on odometer upon delivery (9-19-2016) 1419.2
Mileage on odometer as of 2-26-2017 is 1521.7

I have ridden this bike 102.5 miles over the last 5 months.

This averages out to be 20.5 miles each month or about 5 miles every week.

    Although I have other bikes that I ride;
I feel as if i am slacking.

I really should be riding more.

  2. So I ended up taking a long break from riding.
Sunday June 17, put ~15 miles on it.
Monday June 18, put ~18 miles on it.
Life and weather stopped my riding Tue-Thur.
Friday - Late evening put ~7.5 miles on it.

    Odometer now reads 1555.9

Plan on riding some distance over the course of today and the coming week. Need to build my endurance back up & lose a few pounds.

Looks as if the weather might impede my efforts. :(

  3. Saturday... Odometer at end of day 1566.5
So I didn't quite get in the number of miles I planned.

    10.6 miles.

I might ride some more tonight, but this is what I did so far.

Clearfield to Rodburn Hollow, back to Family Dollar to pick up a few things, and then back to Clearfield.

Taking a few "Long cuts" Hey! Some are actually shorter!

  4. So I'm starting to keep a little riding log here.
This will help me keep up with how many miles I ride per week.

    Tuesday:
    1566.5
    1574.3
    7.8 miles total

    Wednesday:
    1574.3
1580.4 End short ride to store and back / begin longer ride
    1592.6
    18.3 miles total

I have ridden a total of 26 miles so fsr this week.
Road mostly in high gear tor the linger ride.
What I call high gear is when you use the biggest sprocket at the petals and the littlest sprocket on the wheel.

  5. It's supposed to rain all evening, but I managed more than a few miles -- I was going for 10 miles, but cut it a little shy because the rain acted like it was going to start pouring.

    Begin: 1592.6
    End: 1601.1

    Total miles: 8.5

This brings this weeks mileage up to (only) 34.5 miles.
    Maybe the rain will break.

According to these entries I have put only 181.9 miles on this bike since September 2016. It is time to pick up the pace.

  6. Friday
    June 23, 2017
    Beginning Mileage: 1601.1
    Ending Mileage: 1615.4

Rain had more bark than bite (so far) today.
Put 18 miles into today's ride, and can probably get another 5 or 6 miles in this evening if I choose to. Maybe?

I'm only up to 52 miles this week... might better take an evening/night ride if I can manage it. Rain seems to be serious this time around.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  7. So yeah... that rain isn't going to ease up... its going to get worse until 2 AM ... possible tornado activity... Severe Thunderstorm watches/warnings.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  8. Here it is another Saturday.
    Beginning Mileage: 1615.4
    Ending Mileage: 1644.4
    Total Mileage: 29 miles.

This brings me up to 81 miles this week.

19 miles short of my goal of 100 miles this week.
There's a few hours left in the day, but I'm not for sure that I want to go for that extra 19 miles.

Edit to add that little ride to the local convenient store:
    Begin: 1644.4
    End: 1646.0
    Total: 1.6
Now add this to total for day: 30.6
This gives me 82.6 miles for this week.

Close enough for a goal set mid-week!

IF... I could only work in 15 miles a day I'd meet that goal.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  9. Of course it would be entirely possible to ride 15 miles a day by just riding multiple city blocks. Not much adventure to be had there after a while, and the city rides aren't all that strenuous, but it beats nothing at all.

I am taking a much needed break today.
Hope it doesn't put me out of reach of my goal for the coming week or get me out of the habit of riding.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  10. Put in around 5 miles Saturday.
Was all the riding that I got in for the full week.
    ----
    Back to my mileage log
    Saturday:
    Beginning mileage: 1646.0
    Ending mileage: 1651.7

    Sunday (today) :
    Beginning mileage: 1651.7
    Ending mileage: 1663.0

So this is 11.3 miles for the calender week so far.
Already double what I got in last week, but that 29 mile ride around the lake was just a little "much" for my current condition.
I come away from that lake ride with sun and wind burn that blistered and pealed, so I think I'll wait until later on in the year to give it another go... but hey! At least I know that I can still do it--if need be.
    ---
    Editing:
I decided to do another 5 miles tonight, since it is Sunday night and my chances of becoming a statistic is greatly reduced...even on the 4th of July weekend.
A little after 11:00 PM I take a ride up town and back.
    Beginning mileage: 1663.0
    Ending mileage: 1668.4
This gives me 5.4 miles for the night ride, for 16.7 miles today.
A good start for the week ahead.

  11. Just a note to anyone who m ay be reading:
This isn't my "brag box" or anything.
Heck, I've put less than 250 miles on the bike since September.

I only use this post to keep a log of how many miles I am riding, how often, and sometimes where I ride.

Now if I don't have to put any parts on the bike for another 150 miles or so, then it will have paid for itself if talking gasoline dollars. Not even considering things like the lack of an insurance bill, lack of registration sticker fees, etc... It will have paid for itself in gasoline dollars alone.

Plus ++ I get to "know" my town again.

You may not realize it, but you don't really know your town until you have biked your town. (believe or not) You might think you know your town, and you can argue that I'm wrong about one not knowing their town until they have biked their town, but it doesn't bother me one bit. I once would have put up the same argument.

I have found that some of those old "shortcuts" are now gone, some still exist, and there are a few new ones... probably more than a few that I haven't discovered yet... and I'm on a road bike. It's hard to predict how many "shortcuts" I may discover on a mountain bike.

That's enough rambling for now. It's past midnight, and I want to get some miles in tomorrow (between work and errands).

  12. So where does time go?
I didn't ride again until Wednesday. (riding between rains)
    Beginning Mi: 1668.4
    Ending Mi: 1675.9

And then Saturday. (sunny - light clouds)
    Beginning Mi: 1675.9
    Ending Mi: 1682.2

So let me figure this out...
    16.7 miles on Sunday.
    7.4 miles on Wednesday.
    6.3 miles on Saturday.

Adds up to 30.4 miles for the week of July 2 - July 8th.
All having been worked in between Birthday parties, Doctor visits, and a funeral. Mostly long distances with passengers.

Could my passengers have biked those long distances?
May---be, maybe they could... but they aren't exactly Highway Experienced.. Ice Cream would have melted (although it could have been bought a little closer to the destination).. narrow winding little Kentucky roads.. More uphills than downhills, etc, etc, etc... The Gasoline industry made a score! OK! But they were scoring anyway on July 4th week.So I don't have to feel so bad about that tank of gas. I will make up for far more than that in the weeks to come. I hope.

  13. Sunday, July 9:
    Beginning Mileage: 1682.2
    Ending Mileage: 1694.7

    12.5 miles today.
Took in Morehead City Park and Rodburn Park.

I could get an extra 8.5 miles worked in today, but I sit here waiting for videos to upload. Might do it anyway since it's only 8.5 miles and it is Sunday evening after all.

  14. So here it is Monday, and I ran into brake trouble on the road today. The Local "Bike Shop" is CLOSED until Wednesday, else I would have been within a stone-throw of a new cable.

Alas ... I rode on home relying only upon a front brake --- with a load of cucumbers on the rear rack.

    Beginning Miles: 1694.7
    Ending Mileage : 1702.1

9.4 Miles today ... and I wanted to do more.

Like I said earlier... .The Local "Bike Shop" is CLOSED today, they are CLOSED tomorrow, OPEN WEDNESDAY, CLOSED Thursday, OPEN FRIDAY, and OPEN Saturday...

Do I try to keep my money local?
    I try....
But it looks as if I'm going to the local BigBoxMart to grab a replacement cable set at a fraction of the price.
    What else can I do?
Should I WAIT until WEDNESDAY to PAY MORE for the same thing?
    a steel cable... ???

I think I'll make a trip out to the BigBox.

Support your local bike shop (if they allow you to ?)

  15. Tuesday Evening: I have replaced the brake cable and am ready for a test ride.

    Beginning Miles: 1702.1
    Ending Mileage : 1708.7

Looks as if I managed 6.6 miles this evening.
    and 9.4 miles yesterday.
    and 12.5 miles Sunday.
for 28.5 running total this week.

The brake is as good as it's ever been, but could stand a tweak. Maybe it will get that tweaking when I have a second set of hands around.

After writing this I am feeling the urge to ride a few more miles, but this is an urge that I will have to fight. Tomorrow is Wednesday, and only an hour away... So I'll wait and ride again tomorrow while the sun is shining.

  16. Wednesday Evening (late):
Managed to work 6 miles in today.
I have no clue as to how I picked up an extra mile during a 5 mile ride, but the math is working out to show 6 miles.

    Beginning miles: 1708.7
    Ending Mileage : 1714.2

I think the extra mile may have come from sticking mainly to the road on my way back.

  17. Thursday Afternoon.
    July 13, 2017

    Beginning miles: 1714.2
    Ending Mileage : 1724.5

    Roughly 10 miles today.

And again ... without doing the calculator thing...

Nearly 45 miles this week and still counting.

I need to make a ride or two and pick up a few things some time in the morning. I also plan to visit the local bike shop.

I actually had my helmet on and was ready to head out the door as I was typing this entry.

On second thought, Friday morning *might* be the best time to ride, so I'm hanging that helmet up until tomorrow morning.
The sleep will do me good, should it come...

By the way ... I'm looking at ways to work additional miles into my local rides without going way out of my way to get those extra miles.

Perhaps I'll dream some up tonight?

  18. Friday ended up being a no ride day.
Saturday resulted in a little over a 1 mile ride.
Sunday was another no ride day.

    Monday July 17, 2017...
I ran into another mechanical failure today.
Broke my chain while climbing Pine Hill Drive from the 5th St side. Made it to just a few feet from the hill crest.

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Video Widget

Without calculator.. approx 7 miles during this ride.

    Let's do the math now...

    Saturday

    Beginning: 1724.5
    Ending mi: 1725.9
    Totals out at 1.4 mi.

    Monday:

    Beginning: 1725.9
    Ending mi: 1733.2
    Totals out at 7.3 mi.

If I'm doing my math right this puts me at 70.2 miles and running for the month of July.

My analog odometer also give way today...
So how am I going to count my miles?

I broke it's mount by inadvertently grabbing it while flipping the bike over to make the final chain repair.

A friend suggested using an epoxy, and this may be a short term fix for it, but I think I'm going to be in the market for an N.O.S. part. Yes I'm going to replace it with the genuine part ASAP. I have a bike computer that *might* work for a short term substitute... IF the epoxy doesn't buy me enough time to get a replacement.

I'll also be replacing the chain.
Anyone have a stock of N.O.S. chains from the 1970s?

  19. Random thought:
I had a goal of 100 miles a week in June.

Here it is past mid-July and I've only accomplished 70 miles so far this month... I have fallen short towards that goal.

I would appear that I am more realistically averaging 25 miles per week or so--a quarter of my initial goal.

Maybe I'll be getting that 100 miles a week by fall, maybe not.

At this point 50 miles per week seems like a more reasonable goal for me to strive for.
AND to be honest... I don't even know how I come up with such an idea of cycling 100 miles a week! I'm sure that people do get that much mileage in, but I have way too many responsibilities to allow for all that leisure time.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  20. So I'm down to making educated best guesses on mileage'.

No ride on Tuesday. The broken odometer got me down.

I figure if I ride pre-measured distances the mileage will be somewhat accurate. This limits me, but it's all I can do.

Today is Wednesday, July 19, 2017.
    It was hot and sunny.

I rode 10 miles that I'm aware of.

I am not really able to calculate the extra miles ridden, but suspect they amount to less than 5.

The ten miles are calculated by predetermined distance to and from the park at Rodburn Hollow. So that is 10 miles in itself, but the 1/4 mile or so biking around the Tolliver Addition is actually only a guess.

Guessing also plays a role with what is maybe a mile of 2nd Street, maybe another mile of empty parking lots, little stray offs from the main trail. No way to really guess mileage, and no way to remember every single road that I rode today.

So I'll stick to my 10 miles as my estimate for today --- since I know that I did that many miles, and any additional miles will remain as uncounted bonus miles.

Maybe I'll install a little zip-tie special bike computer for the meanwhile. I don't really like them, but i need to keep count of miles vs expenses.

  21. Today is Friday July 21, 2017 and I looks as if I haven't posted here for a few days... Seems like yesterday though.

I used LOCTITE brand Super Glue to repair the mount on my odometer and it seems to be holding.

8.1 miles on the bike today and I can resume keeping an actual mileage log on here now.

So let me catch up first.

    Monday:
    Beginning: 1725.9
    Ending mi: 1733.2
Totals out at 7.3 mi. Broke the chain & the odometer.

    Tuesday:
    I did not ride.

    Wednesday:
10 miles best guess (but probably 12)

    Thursday:
    10 miles pre-calculated.

    Friday:
    Beginning Miles: 1733.2
    Ending Mileage : 1741.8
    Today total mi : 8.6

Running mileage for this week : 36.0 miles.

Running mileage for the month : 98.9 miles.

So total mileage isn't going to match the odometer readings
BUT THE ODOMETER WAS OUT OF COMMISSION FOR A FEW DAYS.
^^ Brief explanation to myself ^^

I would have made this a 10 or 12 mile day, but I ran into a friend and talked for a good half an hour. And when you get to be my age and you run into someone who you have known since you was 3 years old and haven't seen them for a couple of years, you stop and talk to them for a while.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  22. Saturday July 22
    1741.8
    1748.3
6.5 miles so ending week with only 42.5 miles.

    Sunday: Rain no ride.

    Monday:

    1748.3
    1760.7
    12.4 miles today.
Running 111.3 miles for the month of July and going.

So I am somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/4 of the way to my initial goal of weekly miles during the last full week of the month
    ---and---
8.5 miles short of where I feel I should have done last week.

I did manage to overcome a broken chain --somewhat--

Looks as if I have but 3 days this week to ride, and I'll need to ride for the mileage if I get 50 in this week.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  23. On Tuesday I managed to get about 2.5 miles
and I might have managed 2/10 mile on Wednesday.
    Begin miles: 1760.7
    End mileage: 1764.1
Total miles: 3.4 for Tuesday through Wednesday.

It is pouring the rain on Thursday, but it's been decided that I'm still going to get a few miles in today.

    Begin miles: 1764.1
    End mileage: 1773.7
    Total miles: 9.6 for Thursday.

I wasn't hearing the little tick, tick, tick, tick... during the extremely rainy parts of the ride, so I don't know if I have managed to work a 10 mile ride down to 9.6 miles, or if my odometer wasn't counting during part of the ride. I can't imagine knocking over 1/2 mile off---but wait... I know how that happened.

Due to the heavy rain not exhibiting any signs of letting up; I took a turn and bypassed a couple parts of my usual route. So the 9.6 miles would be accurate for today.

I am now at 124.3 miles during the month of July.
This is Thursday, July 27, 2017.
I can ride some more today if I chose to, the rain has let up.
Still at 75 miles short and only the possibility of 4 partial riding days left? I question if I could hit that 200 mark without suffering biker burnout.

SO I DECIDE TO MAKE THAT SECOND RIDE:
    Beginning miles: 1773.7
    Ending Mileage : 1780.3
    Total Miles ridden: 6.6
Total Miles Today : 16.2 Thursday.

    124.3
    + 6.6
    _______
    130.9

So this now puts me at 130.9 miles for the Month of July 2017, and I'm still working towards that 200...although I expect to fall short.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  24. So as Thursday July 27 was my last ride for the month I fall short of 70mi from 200. I won't blame the weather, but maybe the headaches are what took me down for a while. ?

    TODAY IS AUGUST 5, 2017:
And my mileage isn't exactly making sense...
I must have ridden on the 28th or the 29th and not logged the mileage of the ride.
[ edit: after checking a camera time stamp--this extra 5 miles occurred on the 29th ... mystery solved! ]
I do remember dismounting my bike and leaving it in line to walk over to the curb and press the crosswalk button after myself and a line of cars sit at the (defective) intersection (of W Main & KY 32) for 10 minutes... That is probably where an extra 5 miles comes into play.

SO I WAS ACTUALLY 65 MILES SHORT OF 200 IN JULY.

    AUGUST 5, 2017:
    Beginning Miles: 1785.5
    Ending Mileage : 1790.5
    Total Mi Today : 5.0
    Total this Month: 5.0

The calendar has been busy and will remain busy the rest of this month from the looks of things. I will be lucky to do 100 miles if the weather even permits it.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  25. August 9, 2017
Looks as if I managed 11.5 miles today.
    Beginning Miles: 1790.5
    Ending Mileage : 1802.0
So this gives ma 16.5 miles so far... and a long way to go.
Maybe I can get some riding in tomorrow?

    Posted 7 years ago #
  26. It's Sep 26th... and I haven't been on a bike in in over a month!
    Nearly 2 Months!!!

Been walking places where it's impracticable to take a bike.

Seeing new places and some I haven't seen in nearly 30 years.

I hope to get back on the bike soon, but in a way feel it may be better to wait and put a mountain bike on the road.

  27. 1822.3 Beginning Mileage for this year??
Not sure if those miles are uncharted or if I looked at something wrong. Need to double check that number.

Today is March 23 btw.. (2018) Can't see not charting 20 miles, but maybe I have something on a calendar somewhere.

Replaced left (front) shift cable today.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  28. So I double checked and the number is right... and I do remember some uncharted mileage now.

It appears as if I managed 300 miles last year.

Broke 2 old cables during the year (Rear Brake & Front Shifter), and an old chain.

Thinking cables were $2 ea and chain was around $20...
That is about $0.07 cents a mile.
